HobbyBoss' 1/48 scale FJ-4 Fury is available online from Squadron
Here is the second of my 1/48 scale Hobby Boss Fury builds. This is the FJ-4.
The kit includes the markings of an FJ-4 assigned to the Reserve Training Unit at NAS Gynco in the early 1960s and features in Steve Ginter’s Naval Fighters Series No 25 FJ-4/4B book.
The markings are from an assortment of decal sheets. After undercoating in Humbrol Matt White, Xtra Colour White was added then the extensive masking process began for the Flourescent Red Orange. This proved to be a challenging process to say the least and took quite some time and tape!
An undercoat of Flat Humbrol Orange was applied before Testor's Florescent Red Orange was applied. Now even more extensive masking and dare I say it, tape was applied before the Extra Colour Light Gull Grey was then sprayed.
This was followed by Testor’s Insignia Red for the Intake ring and warning stripes. The leading edges of the wings, tail planes and tail were sprayed Humbrol Aluminium.
The cockpit interior is Dark Gull grey and Black while the undercarriage and gear wells are XtraColor White. The final clear coat was supposed to be semi-gloss but ended up somewhat flatter than I wished but, bonus, glossier than the finish for the Fury of Part One. Yeah! Getting there.
This has been one of the most challenging finishes I have applied to any kit that I have built. Now finished, I am very happy with the result and it looks good in the cabinet alongside the FJ-4B of FAGU.
The next Fury will feature an FJ-4 of VU 7 in the Utility scheme.
