P-51D Mustang

Tamiya's 1/48 scale P-51D Mustang is available online from Squadron

They say that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. So, at least to my eyes, this is the perfect Mustang: early D-model (without the fin fillet), with a blue nose, full invasion stripes and lots of kill markings.

I saw this particular machine for the first time in an illustration on the cover of a Squadron Book (P-51 Mustang by Larry Davis). The opportunity to model this Mustang in 1/48th scale came with the decals offered by Golden Eagle Cals EC#100 – The P-51 Mustangs of Major George Preddy. This decal sheet includes the markings for Mustang s/n 413321.

For this project, the kit of choice was the Tamiya one. Little of the basic kit was changed:

• The fin fillet had to go.

• The propeller blades’ cuffs were trimmed

• The step in the flaps was filled

The only item added was a set of colored seatbelts from Eduard.

The model was finished with nitrocellulose paints. Different tones of the basic aluminum paint were applied to selected panels. Weathering, a light one, was done by post-shading and oil wash in the panel lines.
