Roy Sutherland, the owner of Barracuda Studios sure seems to have taken a shine to Tamiya’s new 1/32 scale P-51D kit.

So much so that he has been hard at work breathing his magic upon it and, so far, has produced three mixed media detail sets and a decal sheet to enhance the cockpit as well as a further detail kit to super detail the compressed paper drop tanks that the P-51 carried to further extend its already legendary range.

BR32012 consists of 13 resin parts that will give you new and more detailed cockpit sidewalls that replace the kit’s parts. A fret of that holds 21 brass-etch parts is also included with the set. The brass-etch parts provide even further detail to the resin sidewalls and it also carries a number of other cockpit details including

  • Canopy rails,

  • Rudder pedal inserts that carry the North American Aviation Company trademark as well as well as the wording ‘Depress pedal to release Parking Brake, and

  • Bomb salvo handles,

A pair of landing gear uplocks and a pair of replacement breather plates for the lower half of the engine cowling are also included.

The resin parts are very crisply cast and there are no pin holes or mis-casts in any of the parts in my sample. The resin used to cast the parts is pretty brittle and you will need to exercise care whist working with it. To be fair though the instruction sheet that comes with the set does warn you about this and is peppered with instructions like “carefully remove”, and “quite fragile”. Whilst on the instruction sheet, it is very well written and illustrated with excellent quality sharp and clear colour images showing the parts in place as well as clear and concise written instructions.

The parts come packed in a clear plastic zip-loc bag with a cardboard header. The photo-etch fret is taped to a thin cardboard backing sheet to stop it from being bent in transit.

Worth the price of entry? Definitely!
