Advantages: |
Good quality, clear instructions, with good scale finesse. |
Disadvantages: |
|
Conclusions: |
Both of these sets are produced to high standards, and have clear instructions. I believe that they will add considerable detail and scale finesse to any 1/72-scale jeep kit, but I am wary of their suitability for Airfix’s 1/76-scale issue.

3D Miniatures is a new company to me, and if they are new to you too, have a look at their website here.

The sets reviewed here come in small zip-lock bags containing a single PE fret and folded instructions, along with a card header. I found I had to cut the bag as the instructions were such a tight fit I could not remove them without risk of bending and damaging the PE fret.

The sets claim to be suitable for any 1/72-scale jeep kit from Airfix, Heller, Dragon, Academy and Hasegawa kits. I gather that the 1/72-scale Jeep scene is a bit fraught when it comes to scale accuracy. In the initial publication of this article, I assumed that the Airfix kit was their old 1/76th item that came with the Buffalo kit. Shortly after publication a visitor to HyperScale advised Brett Green that this was not the case; and stated that the Airfix kit is not the original 1960's kit to 1/76th scale, but a re-box of the Heller 1/72nd Jeep. Heller's kit is apparently is very good, and the best available in the One True Scale. It seems that the Academy 1/72nd kit is in fact closer to 1/76th, and has some accuracy issues. I am unsure of which kits the review sets may be optimised for (if they are in fact optimised), but I see from their website that 3D Miniatures also lists other sets specifically for the Academy and Airfix jeep kits.

The above scale concern aside, the parts are made to a very high standard, and the instructions seem quite clear to follow. The only challenge will be dealing with some of the very small pieces involved.

The detail set includes a piece of angle iron, often fitted in Europe to protect from wires strung across roads, windscreen and rifle rack, radio, .30-cal and .50-cal machinegun accoutrements, folded roof rails, antenna mounts, jerry-can holder, rear bumper, spare wheel mount, tools, throttle, brake and clutch pedals, plus numerous small bodywork and chassis details.

The wheel chain set includes chains for four wheels, four cable reels in two sizes, a .30-cal ammo crate, and a large rear stowage rack.
Both of these sets are produced to high standards, and have clear instructions. I believe that they will add considerable detail and scale finesse to any 1/72-scale jeep kit, but I am wary of their suitability for Airfix’s 1/76-scale issue.
Thanks to 3D Miniatures for these review samples.
