Trumpeter's 1/48 scale MiG-15UTI is available online from Squadron.com

Description

First flown in 1949, that means two years after the single seater took to the air for the first time, the UTI has been conceived as an advanced trainer for this type. In this role it served in various air forces as long as “Fagots” were in use.

MiG-15 UTIs served even well in training MiG-17 and MiG-19 pilots, besides that it saw widespread use as liaison- and even light attack aircraft. No wonder that this versatile little jet had been flown till the early eighties; for an example East Germans Luftwaffe discharged their MiG-15 UTIs not until 1985.

Trumpeters kit is identic with that of their MiG-15bis -except those parts which are needed for the two seat version of course.

From the start I had decided to show both canopies in the open position, so I opted for an Eduard interior set. But, after having built this kit, I can promise you will get a reasonable detailed interior even built out of the box.

Besides that I was not really happy with the "metalic look" of Eduards seatbelts, so I exchanged parts of the harness with Tamiya masking tape, which was properly coloured and animated with a bit of "tear and wear".

There is some filler and even more sanding needed here and there, but nothing to worry about.

The kits decal sheet is somewhat small with no stencils at all. For me that did not mean that applying decals would be an easy affair: the Pakistani roundel on the left fuselage side, the very first decal I had applied, shattered during transfer and had to be restored by dry brush and careful mixed green colour.

I am happy to get that distinctive, historically important and a little bit pretty-ugly looking jet into my collections. I recommend this Trumpeter kit to everyone interested in Cold War aviation!
