I was unsure of quite what to make of this book at first, possibly perhaps because it covered what was a fairly familiar subject for me, and so did not have a lot that was new to offer. But on giving it a bit of thought I have decided it does quite a good job in general; it gives a good overview of the Ju 87, its development, operational use with the Luftwaffe by theatre, and by other air arms. The contents cover:
This is not a technical book, nor one replete with detail photos and plans; and whilst it has some colour scheme profiles, its use as a modelling reference is quite limited. Its relatively small size also limits the impact of the photos it contains.
As an introduction to the Ju 87 it does a good job of providing a very readable and concise overview, and includes some pilot’s accounts of operations that are interesting to read. To get an idea of content, click here to link to extract with a selection of pages.
It also ends with a useful guide to further reading, mentioning several good titles for more in-depth coverage. It was this last aspect that most of all put the Air Vanguard in perspective for me - It gives a good broad brush of numerous aspects of the Stuka’s history and employment, and guides you if you have an appetite for more.
This book was not quite my cup of tea, but that is not the book’s failing. It just happens that I would be more drawn to its list of further reading; particularly as I like in-depth technical coverage and autobiographical accounts of operations.
As an all-round introduction to the Ju 87 it does a good job, is attractively presented, good quality, and I think well-priced. I happily recommend it if this is what you are looking for.
