Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2 Fuselage Halves |
Last year, my good friend Massimo went to China for his job and I thought that it would probably be a good time to search and buy a large scale Trumpeter Messerschmitt 109 G in 24th scale. He was so kind to find one in Malaysia at a bargain price and once back for Christmas, we managed to organize the delivery because we don’t live in the same city.

I started, building and finishing the Me109 off and it was a pleasure, but I was attracted by the fact that in the box there was also a clear sprue, with port and starboard fuselage, air scoop and other details, for those who wanted to build a model that shows all the interiors, they also provide a further set of canopies. I thought that it could be nice to build and paint the two semi-fuselages to be displayed onto a wood base, one would be for me and one for Massimo, also because the big Me 109 was a gift for me.
Missing parts were a spare rudder, spinner and exhaust stacks but I keep on resin casting 3 or 4 copies for my own Me 109 so I have a stack for each semi-fuselage.

I did the same about the oil radiator cover.

I made a vacuform for rudder and spinner that were carefully strengthened in the inside by glueing plastic scraps and few drop of resin.

The most difficult part was the cutting of the three canopies that were glued together and then carefully cut in half with a razor saw.

At last, I scratchbuilt a sort of wing rib with details to avoid the large void where the wing was to be.

The real fun was the painting of the two half, made with Gunze Sangyo aqueous paint.

Several stages of airbrush work were needed and the results really pleased me.

I then sprayed two light layers of Tamiya Gloss Clear from a rattle can and then the Trumpeter suggested version decals were applied. After a day or so, a well diluted Tamiya Clear flat was sprayed with my airbrush. To complete them, I added a medium weathering with oil colours and some dry-brush all over the models with the three RLM 74/75/76 grays and with silver.

It has been a pleasure, really ! Another friend, seeing the results wanted to gift me an 1/24 Airfix Mk I Hurricane bought at a flea market and missing several parts. Considering that semi-fuselages, spinner, rudder and canopy are inside the bag, it will be my next project for sure and he, as Massimo, will have his well-deserved half.
A special thanks to Massimo Rickler and my son Francesco Di Terlizzi.
