FirstLook

Also known as the Bleriot-SPAD 510, it was a French single-seat, single-engined biplane fighter aircraft. First flying in 1933, 60 were built for the French Air Force, entering service in 1936. The type remained in service as a fighter-trainer at the start of WWII. It was the last French biplane fighter to enter production and had a similar performance to the Gloster Gladiator. Some were based in North Africa before WWII.

The Azure-Frrom kit has been around for a couple of years and is a cracker. It has been released in two forms as FR0049 and FR0050. This crowded 90x60mm sheet adds a wider range of markings for the kits.

Printed on a deep blue backing sheet to aid the identifying of the white insignia, it is provided as usual in a clear zip-lock bag.

The sheet is accompanied by a single black and white printed A4 instruction sheet, which is in both French and English. As well as the location of decals, the sheet also gives some history and painting guides for the six examples, although cocardes are only provided for a single aircraft. White underwing matricules (serials) indicate green lower surfaces and black ones show that the undersides of the wings were silver.

The six examples are :

  1. Nr.13 white N191 of ERC 571 in North Africa in June 1939, green upper fuselage and all horizontal surfaces, both upper and lower, over silver lower fuselage with a colourful fuselage insignia.

  2. Nr.19 white N197 of GCII/7 in Dijon in 1937 in the same scheme,

  3. Nr.45 black N223 of GC I/7 in Dijon in 1938, in dark green upper surfaces and silver lower fuselage and under the flying surfaces.

  4. Nr.39 , black N217, at Mions-Corbas in June 1940 in the above scheme.

  5. Nr.41, black N219 of the CO of 7th squadron in Dijon 1937-8 in the above scheme, and

  6. Nr.34, black N212 of ERC 572 in Tunisia in 1940 - this one has to be made up using decals from the kit as well as a selection from this sheet. This is the only example with cocardes on the fuselage.

Certainly a variety of markings and colours for this petite biplane fighter that was obsolete before getting into service. If your interest lies in the direction of pre-war biplanes then this is the sheet for you.
